In order to be as transparent as possible, I’ve outlined an overview of Jesus’ collective birthday gift. There are three absolutes that govern The Cause of Christ:
- The royalty split is always 75-25% (the ministry receives 75% royalty and I receive 25% royalty of every sold book, whether E-book or softcover). Keep in mind that I’m fully responsible for all taxes.
- This fundraiser is intended to raise funds for the “work of ministry”—to spread the gospel throughout the world through 100 reputable ministries, many of whom you know.
- I’ve set my maximum royalty income at $80,000. I don’t want to get rich through this fundraiser. Other expenses that will be covered by the 25% royalty are taxes, business expenses, and some personal expenses (see below). Anything beyond that will go to the “work of ministry,” as I’ve outlined below.
Buy the E-book through Amazon
For E-books, Amazon takes 30% of the price when it’s priced at $5.00. That means a $5.00 E-book gives $3.50 in royalty.
75% = $2.63 royalty
25% = $0.87 royalty
For illustration sake, let’s say that 1,000,000 people buy It’s All about Jesus for only $5.00.
1,000,000 x $2.63 = $2,630,000 ($26,300 for each ministry)
1,000,000 x $0.87 = $870,000
Under the current tax law, I can deduct 60% of my Adjusted Gross Income for charitable giving.
Keep in mind that these are general calculations.
The total income is $3,500,000
A 60% deduction for charitable giving will make the taxable income $1,400,000
A 37% tax bracket means that I have to pay $518,000 in taxes.
The 25% royalty income is $870,000 – $518,000 = $352,000
That amount will be used as follows:
$80,000 – income
$40,000 – business expenses
$130,000 – pay off home mortgage and consumer debt
The $250,000 is roughly 7.14% of the total income.
The remaining $102,000 will go to the “work of ministry” (TBD).
Any other number of buyers will follow the same concept and calculations. The only other item (as part of the 25% royalty) I may consider is office space for my business.
While these numbers may seem out of proportion to everyday life, the main question is:
Is it reasonable to believe that 1,000,000 Christians will be willing to buy a $5.00 one-year devotional that will encourage them in their faith and walk with Jesus, knowing that it will be used as a fundraiser for 100 reputable ministries?
They buyer receives a one-year devotional and will be an essential part in raising funds for the spread of the gospel through these 100 ministries.
A win-win!
Will you pray that the Lord will make this fundraiser acceptable to His people (see Rom. 15:30-31) and share it on your social media?

Only He can bring it about. May He bless it accordingly!

P.S. I have reached out twice to ECFA in order to seek accountability for my fundraising activities. Since The Cause of Christ didn’t fit their categories, I didn’t qualify. I’m more than willing to be fully accountable to any legitimate organization, business, or person.
